Redwood Falls man sentenced for fleeing police officer during high speed chase

A Redwood Falls man, Zaya Luu, age 26, was sentenced in Redwood County Court for leading law enforcement on a high speed chase last August.

According to court documents, on Aug. 27, a Redwood Falls Police Officer noted a vehicle traveling at 63 mph in a 40 mph zone near E. Bridge Street and Highway 101. The officer activated his emergency lights and attempted to stop the vehicle, but it took off at speeds that reached 111 mph.

The officer noted one person in the vehicle, the driver, was wearing a dark-colored hood or hat. The officer ended the pursuit dur to safety concerns as the vehicle continued to drive at over 100 mph, and was crossing over the fogline at the edge of the road.

Another Redwood Falls police officer reported he had contact with the driver, Zaya Luu, at a gas station in Redwood Falls immediately prior to the pursuit, after the cashier had asked Luu to leave.

Two days later, on Aug. 29, police learned Luu was at his residence in Redwood Falls, along with the vehicle he had been driving. Luu acknowledged he had been driving the vehicle during the chase.

On Oct. 16, Luu was sentenced for felony fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle to 20 days local confinement, supervised probation for three years, and fines and fees of $285.
