By the time the challenge was over, the Renville County Sheriff’s Office squad car was so full of donated food it had to be delivered on a truck.

The Renville County Sheriff’s Department’s first annual “Stuff a Squad Car” event for the Renville County Food Shelf collected over five tons of food and several thousand dollars this month.

Elementary schools and churches in Renville County accepted the Sheriff’s Office’s challenge. Beginning on Tues., Nov. 15, the first Sheriff’s Office “Stuff a Squad Car Challenge” collected 10,690 pounds of food and $2,752.36 in cash for the food shelf.

The Sheriff’s Office promised a “classroom donut party” to the grade in each of the elementary schools in Renville County that brought the most food to school to support the food drive.  Also, “after-worship coffee and donuts – served by the Sheriff’s Office” was offered to the churches that raised the most money and the most food for the cause.

By the end, the Sheriff’s Office SUV squad car was so full of food there was no room for a deputy to drive, and the cruiser needed to be delivered to the food shelf on a tow truck.  Also, a trailer was brought in and was stuffed full several times over with food that will also be delivered to the food shelf in the coming days.

“Classroom donut parties with the cops” will be scheduled soon for the winning grades at RCW, BOLD, St. Mary’s-Bird Island, BLHS and Cedar Mountain elementary schools.   The Sheriff’s Office will also be making coffee and donut visits to the winning churches, St. Aloysius Catholic in Olivia (most food collected) and Trinity Lutheran in rural Hector (most money raised).

“We hope that the “Stuff a Squad Car Challenge” will give our food shelf a much-needed boost before the upcoming holidays” said Sheriff Scott Hable.  “On behalf of all of the men and women at your Renville County Sheriff’s Office, we sincerely thank everyone who participated, donated or was otherwise involved with the this food drive.”
