Jean Youngerberg

Jean Youngerberg age 81, of Springfield, MN died on January 8, 2024, at New Ulm Medical Center.

Visitation will be on Friday, January 12, 2024 from 4 to 7:00 pm at the Sturm Funeral Home, Springfield Chapel and will continue on Saturday from 10 until 11 am at the St. John Lutheran Church, Springfield, MN. Service will be held at the St. John Lutheran Church on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at 11 am.

The clergy will be Pastor Julie Smith. Interment will be at the Northstar EUB Cemetery in Springfield, MN.

Jean Paulette Kersten Youngerberg was born on October 23, 1942, to Carl and Ruth (Wendt) Kersten at the Springfield Hospital in Springfield, MN. She grew up on the family farm northwest of Springfield. Jean was baptized, confirmed, and was married at the United Brethren Church in Springfield. After graduating from Springfield Public School in 1960, Jean graduated from Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter with a degree in Elementary Education in 1964. On June 26, 1964, Jean was united in marriage to Dennis Youngerberg. She taught at Comfrey school until their children were born. Their marriage was blessed with 5 daughters and 1 son. Jean became a member of St. John Lutheran Church and was involved in the choir and circle. She also taught Sunday School and lead the Junior Choir. Jean was active as a 4-H leader, on the St. John Lutheran Home Auxiliary board, and garden club. She enjoyed gardening and flowers, word searches, Scrabble, and soap operas. Jean loved traveling up north to view the changing leaves by Lake Superior, going to cattle shows, attending the Minnesota State Fair and concerts with her sister and friends, and going out to eat with her husband. The joy of her life was her grandchildren. She was known to be the greatest cheerleader for both her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband Dennis Youngerberg; daughters – Wendy (John) DeRung, Shelly (Scott) Niewohner, Denise (Mark) Hauger, Jenny (Joe) Medina, Penny (Jason) Koets; son – Dana Youngerberg; grandchildren – Jena (Tommy) Eickelberg, Mara DeRung, Lucas & Hayley Niewohner, Sydney, Caleb, & Emma Hauger, Anna Medina, Cole & Kiersten Koets; siblings – Carlotta (James) Lindeman, Angela Ames, Gail (Donn) Moll, and Julie Jenkins. Jean was preceded in death by her parents – Carl and Ruth Kersten, parents-in-law August and Rose Youngerberg, nephew Paul Lindeman, and niece Alison Ames.
