Elizabeth “Lizzy” was born June 25, 1924 in her home on the family farm in rural Springfield to Otto and Martha (Sandmann) Krueger. She attended country school through eighth grade; at which time she began working at a general store and helping local neighbors in their homes. She married Peter Vanderwerf on September 8,1948 and together they raised three sons on their family farm. From the very beginning, Lizzy maintained a very large chicken barn. One of her great joys was all the egg customers that came to her door and visited throughout the day. She also taught her grandchildren to help with all the chores and washing eggs. She loved baking, canning, gardening, making field lunches and summer family picnics. Her other hobbies included embroidery and quilting. Lizzy was never seen without a smile, and she showed unlimited patience to us all.

She is survived by her three sons – Dave (Lynn) of Dawson, Doug (Jean) of Hutchinson and Curt (LuAnn) of New Ulm; grandchildren – Becky (Kevin) Myers, Mark (Michelle) Vanderwerf, Laura (Eric) Espeseth, Peter Vanderwerf, Kathryn (Vern) Smith, Amanda (Andy) Pearson, Erin (Jeff) Kissner, Andrea (Kyle) Krenz; and fourteen great grandchildren. Lizzy was preceded in death by her parents; husband Peter; siblings and their spouses – Erma (Jerome) Hoecherl, Elsie (Henry) Roiger, Erv (Lois) Krueger, Evelyn (Florian) Wersal, in-laws, Melvin Schwartz and Roger Vanderwerf; nephew Gary Schwartz and niece JoAnn Wintheiser.
