Daniel Jerome Filzen
The funeral service for Daniel “Dan” Filzen, 43, of Granite Falls, will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Belview. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home in Echo and Tuesday, one hour prior to the service; 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Belview. Interment with military honors will follow the service at the Belview Cemetery.
Daniel Jerome Filzen was born on August 10, 1978, in Redwood Falls, MN, to Daniel A. and Kristine (Pederson) Filzen. He grew up in Belview and graduated from BDRSH High School in Renville. Dan attended Southwest Minnesota State University and worked for Schult Homes in Redwood Falls. Immediately following the attack on September 11, 2001, Dan enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served as a Humvee and Bradley Gunner in the Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Unit in Ramadi Iraq. Dan also fought in the battle of Fallujah. After his honorable discharge, he returned home to Southwest Minnesota. He was united in marriage to Jenna Zihlke and to this union was born son James. The family lived in Morgan and Dan worked for Schult Homes. Dan struggled off and on with PTSD after his military service. Most recently he was living in Granite Falls. He enjoyed hunting and was a gun collector and enthusiast.
Daniel died unexpectedly on Thursday, February 3, 2022, at his residence in Granite Falls. He is survived by his son, James, of Sanborn, father Daniel A. Filzen of Redwood Falls, mother Kristine (and Kevin) Meier of Echo, sister Tina (and Andrew) Korstad of Granite Falls, brother Tim (and Katie) Filzen of Hanover, niece and nephews Angel, Tristan, Remington, Peyton and Lincoln, grandmother Rita (and Joe) Walter, aunts, uncles, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Donald Filzen and Peter and Joan Pederson and step-mother Julie Filzen.
