Elsie Weigel, age 96, of Danube died Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at the St. Cloud Hospital.  Funeral Services will be Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Danube with Rev. Michael Kuschel officiating.  Burial will be in the Olivia Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the church.  Arrangements by Dirks-Blem Funeral Service, Olivia, MN.

Elsie Ada Weigel was born August 9, 1924 in rural Danube, Minnesota to Frank and Anna (Reetz) Weigel.  Elsie grew up in Danube and was confirmed at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church on May 15, 1938.  She graduated from Danube High School in 1942. Elsie started working for the State Bank of Danube on May 11, 1945 and retired on November 3, 1989.  She was the organist at St. Matthew’s from 1941-1980.  Elsie was a loyal fan of the Danube Hawks basketball team, not missing a single game in the 1950’s and 60’s.  She was a world traveler and cherished many adventures with her sisters. A trip to the Holy Land was a highlight in 1985.  Elsie enjoyed gardening both flowers and vegetables, canning, fishing and most of all visiting with friends and family. She loved a good cup of coffee, pie and ice cream. Elsie lavishly hosted many holiday meals for the whole family at her home, taking pride to arrange for every detail. She was a devoted caregiver to many family members, always putting others before herself. Elsie was dedicated to her faith and served as an active member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Danube.

Elsie is survived by her nieces and nephews: Julia and (Cedric) Bryant of Anoka, MN, Elaine Mathis of Grey Eagle, MN, Don and (Brenda) Mathis of Anoka, MN, Jim and (Gene) Gilbert of Connecticut,  Charles Weigel of California, Daryl Tom of Washington, Dean and (Jean) Weigel of Arkansas, Cherry and (Larry) Fiedler of Danube, MN, and her great nieces and nephews: Tera and (Tim) Ries, Lara Carlson, AnMarie O’Quinn, Scott and (Darnell) Anthony, Jeff Weigel, Sandy Zitzloff, Kim and (Brian) Curry, Stephen and (Tonda) Weigel, Christel and (Brett) Roelofs, Jeremy and (Renea) Weigel, Clarissa and (Andy) Dumdei, Karolyn Tom, Laura and (Scott) Kennedy, Angie and (Cutter) Honeycutt, Nathan and (Jayme) Mathis, Seth Mathis, David and (Natasha) Mathis, Joshua and (Brittany) Mathis, and Landon and (Caitlen) Mathis.  Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Anna Weigel, and her siblings: Elfrieda Weigel, Herbert Weigel, Hulda Gilbert, Christian Weigel, Eberhardt Weigel, Anne Weigel and Esther Weigel Mathis.
