A Morton man was given an 18 month prison sentence in Renville County District Court Tuesday morning for shooting his girlfriend in the leg March 15th.

Court records say Billy Joe Fischer, age 41, and his girlfriend were involved in a domestic incident at Prairie’s Edge Casino near Granite Falls March 15th. The police were called, and as the couple were driving away from the casino, Fischer shot his girlfriend in the leg. He was later arrested in Granite Falls.

Fischer was originally charged with 2nd Degree Assault With a Dangerous Weapon, Felon in Possession of a Firearm and Domestic Assault, but he pleaded guilty in August to Domestic Assault and the other charges were dismissed. Judge Thomas Van Hon gave Fischer 18 months in prison, but gave him credit for 8.4 months he already spent behind bars, so Fischer faces an additional 9-and-a-half months. He must also pay his victim restitution.
