A Milroy man, Philip Douglas Sovell, age 37, has been sentenced in Redwood County court for attempting to stab a man while hijacking the victim’s truck.

According to court documents, on April 6 of this year, Redwood County deputies learned of a 911 call reporting someone attempting to hijack a car and stab the victim. Three law enforcement officers arrived at the intersection of County Road 32 and Aspen Avenue to find Sovell, who ran away when officers ordered him to stop.

Sovell finally lay on the ground as directed, and officers noted a large pair of scissors in his right hand. Officers ordered him to toss the scissors away, but instead Sovell stood and ran away again. When Sovell slowed, one of the officers tased him. A search of Sovell’s person turned up a meth pipe with residue, the scissors, and $6,243 in cash.

The victim stated he had been driving on County Road 32, and saw Sovell out walking in the cold weather. The victim offered Sovell a ride, but after a bit Sovell began acting “fidgety”. The victim asked Sovell to get out of the truck, and Sovell attempted to stab him with the scissors. When Sovell left the truck, the victim drove away and called 911.

At the hospital, while being looked over by medical staff, Sovell admitted he used methamphetamine every day.

On Sept. 12, Philip Douglas Sovell was sentenced to 66 months the correctional facility in St. Cloud.
