A Bird Island house was deemed a total loss after a garage fire later spread to the residence earlier this week.

On Monday, Sept. 18, at about 6:40 p.m., the Renville  County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a residential fire in the 900 block of 4th St S, Bird Island.

Emergency crews  found the garage of the residence was fully engulfed in flames. Emergency crews were able  to contain the fire in the garage. On Tuesday morning, at around 4 a.m., emergency crews were called back to the residence because the fire had reignited. The  residence had significant damaged and deemed a total loss.  

Preliminary investigation revealed the fire started in the garage and spread  throughout the residence.  

The Bird Island Fire Department was assisted on scene by the Renville County  Sheriff’s Office, Olivia Fire Department, Bird Island MRU, Olivia Ambulance,  Olivia Police Department and the Minnesota State Fire Marshall’s Office. 

The Renville County Sheriff’s Office and Minnesota State Fire Marshal are  continuing the investigation.
