A man was shot and wounded charging at Willmar police officers with a knife on Sunday morning.

At about 8:10 a.m. Willmar Police were dispatched to the 300 block of 4th Street SW after a 9-1-1 call from a victim indicating someone had threated him with a knife.

While speaking with the victim, the suspect ran from a nearby doorway and charged at the officer with a knife. The officer gave repeated commands and drew his handgun. The suspect continued to advance and threaten the officer with the knife. The officer fired his handgun, stopping the assault and the suspect fled.

The officer and others took the suspect into custody a short distance away, and immediate life saving measures were administered. The suspect was taken to CentraCare – Rice Memorial Hospital and later transferred to a higher care facility. The officer involved in the incident received injuries that were treated by medical personnel on-scene.

There is no ongoing threat to public.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has been asked to investigate the case.
