Minnesota deaths from tainted cantaloupe rise to three

The state’s death toll from cantaloupes tainted with salmonella has risen to three, according to the Center for Disease Control on Friday. The cantaloupes were sold under the Malichita or Rudy labels and distributed by Trufresh, based in Arizona.

According to the CDC, 302 people across 42 states have been sickened in an outbreak that began Oct. 16. Over the past 10 days, 72 people have reported illness due to tainted cantaloupe.

Symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps that usually appear 6 hours to 6 days after ingesting the bacteria Most people recover without treatment after 4 to 7 days, but infections can be dangerous for children under five and adults 65 and older.
