Commission approves design for new state flag

The quest for new Minnesota state flag took a big step Tuesday morning, when the State Emblems Redesign Commission voted to approve a final design. The new flag portrays the conceptual shape of Minnesota in dark blue, and the rest of the flag in light blue. The flag has a single eight-pointed star pointed north on the shape of Minnesota.

The new flag design will replace Minnesota’s existing state flag on May 11 unless the Minnesota State Legislature chooses to get involved.

The Commission also voted for a modification to the state seal. Commissioners approved changing the number of yellow bars around the outer ring of the seal to 98, representing Minnesota’s 87 counties and 11 federally-recognized tribal nations.
