Sidney Norman Blagsvedt

Sidney Norman Blagsvedt, age 101, of Sacred Heart, passed away peacefully at Parkview Nursing Home in Belview on October 31. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 7, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Sacred Heart.  The Rev. Michelle Kleene will officiate.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  Visitation for Sid will be Wednesday from 5-7  p.m. and will continue on Thursday one hour prior to the services all at the church in Sacred Heart.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church or the Renville County Walk in the Park.  Arrangements are with Dirks-Blem Funeral Service, Renville, MN.

He was born on May 24, 1923, on a farm northeast of Lenora, Minnesota to Ole Edward and Elfrieda Verna Blagsvedt. He was baptized and confirmed in the First Lutheran Church in Mabel. When he was six years old the family moved to Prosper.  He attended eight years of grade school in Prosper. Sid worked at several farms, had a paper route, and did odd jobs while going to school. He attended high school in Canton. When his family moved to Whalen he volunteered for the army at age 18, serving in the “Service Battery” of the field artillery of the 103rd Cactus Division.

He married Dorothy Marie Eithun on August 26, 1944, at Bethlehem Lutheran Parsonage in Lanesboro. Three daughters were born to this marriage, Kay Marie, Carol Jean and Pamela Sue. Both worked in Rochester until Kay was born, when Dorothy became a homemaker. They lived in Rochester, Lanesboro, and Harmony until 1949, when they moved to Sacred Heart. In 1946, he signed on with Midland Coop Inc, of Minneapolis for managers training. He trained at several cooperatives, and the Midland Warehouse. He also took short courses at the University of Minnesota and Delevan Wisconsin. In August of 1949, he took the job as General Manager of Coop Products Association of Sacred Heart. He retired from the manager’s position in 1985. He worked part time for Skyway Ag and Peterson Partners, and spent winters in Texas and Arizona. Summers were mostly spent at his shop working on the antique cars and the lake home on Norway Lake.  After 68 years of marriage, Dorothy passed away on July 30, 2012.

He is survived by his daughters, Kay Marie, Carol Jean, and Pamela Sue; grandchildren Richard (Brenda), Brian (Stephanie), Mitchell (Kelsey) and 2 step-grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren and 8 step-great-grandchildren; his brother Wayne (Marian) Blagsvedt, his sister-in-law Janet (James) Bremseth; his special friends Arden Flaata and Bob Barwick; and so many more relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy, two sons-in-law, Ronald Peterson and Joe Thompson, four siblings, and three step-grandchildren.
