Rita Filzen Walter, age 90, of Redwood Falls, MN, passed away on Thursday, May 4, 2023 at River Valley Health and Rehab Center in Redwood Falls, MN. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 9, 2023 from St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Redwood Falls, MN. A luncheon will follow at the church before going to the burial in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church Cemetery in Bechyn. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. with a Parish Prayer Service at 5 p.m. on Monday, May 8, 2023 , all at the Nelson-Hillestad Funeral Home in Redwood Falls. Visitation will continue from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church on Tuesday.

Rita Filzen Walter was born December 10, 1932, in Henryville Township, MN to Henry and Anna (Malecek) Schneider. She attended Country School #27 and Danube High School. Rita married Donald J. Filzen in 1950. They were married for 34 years and had 9 children together.  She worked at Redwood Public Health for 16 years as a Home Health Aide.  After Donald’s death in 1985, Rita married Joseph Walter on October 29th 1988.  Rita was a member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church where she volunteered for several activities throughout the years. She enjoyed baking. Kolache and cinnamon rolls were a favorite of her family and friends. She will be remembered  for her kindness and hard work.

Rita is survived by husband Joseph Walter of Redwood Falls; children: David Filzen of Hope Mills, NC, Gregory (Linda) Filzen of Hutchinson, MN, Patricia (Darwin) Kutzorik of Grand Rapids, MN, Daniel Filzen of Redwood Falls, MN, Robert (Rindy) Filzen of Lucan, MN, Joyce Eckel of Tuscon, AZ,  and Nancy Grossman of Cohasset, MN. Stepchildren: Edward Walter, Eugene (Nancy), Bernard (Mary) Walter, Monica (Randy) Kirchberg, Helen (Joe) Andries, Lois (Matt) Rengel, Grace (Wade) Dunkley. She is also survived by 43 Grandchildren and 50 Great Grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Rita was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Donald J. Filzen; son Jeffrey D. Filzen; daughter Monica M. Glazier;  granddaughter Tammy L. Bergstrom; grandson Daniel J. Filzen; brother Henry (Bud) Schneider; her sisters Martha (Serbus) Nesburg and Mary Ann Zetah; son-in -law’s Walter Glazier and Larry E. Grossman, and daughter-in-laws, Juli Filzen and Brenda Filzen.
