John Serbus

John Serbus, age 96, of Olivia died Friday, April 26, 2024 at RenVilla Nursing Home in Renville.  Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, May 3, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia with Rev. Joe Steinbeisser as celebrant.  Military honors will be provided following the service.  Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. at the church. Arrangements are by Dirks-Blem Funeral Service of Olivia.

John Francis Serbus was born July 30, 1927 to James J. and Frances Rose (Hlavinka) Serbus. He grew up on the family farm south of Olivia near Bechyn. John attended country school at District 12 for eight years. He started farming in 1955 south of Danube. John married Louisa Steffel at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Lake Lillian and their marriage was blessed with four children. He was a farmer as well as worked at both Green Giant and Jackpot Junction. John and Louisa moved off the farm to Olivia in 1994. John was a faithful member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia.

John is survived by his wife, Louisa; his children: Brian (Mary Lou) Serbus of New Ulm, MN, Bruce (Lynn) Serbus of Sioux Falls, SD, Norb (Cindy) Serbus of Renville, MN, and Valora (Gregg) Stangl of Pierz, MN; his 11 grandchildren: Aaron, Angela, Jeff, Erica, Nathan, Jaden, Diane, Darren, Kimberly, Tracie, and Cassandra; his nine great-grandchildren and one on the way; his sisters: Martha Tauer and Rita Schroepfer; his brother-in-law, Ernie Steffel; his sisters-in-law, Gladys McClendon and Karen Steffel. John was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, James and Lloyd Serbus.
