Daniel Henry McNamara was born on October 21, 1928 to Henry and Ellen (Wagemaker) McNamara on the family farm in rural Bird Island. He graduated from Olivia High School in 1947 and continued his education at the Minneapolis Business School. Dan served his country in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1955. Dan met the love of his life, Mary Ann Meyer at the Scott Air Force Base in Belleville, IL. They were united in marriage on November 26, 1955 at St. Peters Cathedral in Belleville, IL. They made their home on the family farm in rural Bird Island where they raised their seven children. Together they enjoyed golfing, dancing, and playing cards with their card clubs. They also enjoyed traveling; their favorite place being Naples, FL where they wintered for 35 years. In 1989, Dan and Mary moved into town and even though you can take the farmer off the farm, you can’t take the farm out of the farmer. Dan enjoyed combining so much it became known as his “happy place” every fall until 2018 after he celebrated his 90th birthday. Dan was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Bird Island Lions Club, and American Legion. He was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church serving as a communion minister and lector. Dan leaves behind a legacy of faith, family, and farming.
