Bette Ann Hillemeier

Bette Ann Hillemeier, age 103, of Olivia passed away at the Buffalo Lake Health Care Center on December 11, 2023, after a long and blessed life.  Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, December 16, 2023 at 11 a.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia with Rev. George Schmit as celebrant.  Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bird Island.  Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Renville County Hospice, St. Mary’s School, Bird Island, MN, or St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Arrangements by Dirks-Blem Funeral Service, Olivia, MN.

Bette was born on April 19, 1920 to George and Villa McDowell. She grew up in Olivia where she graduated from Olivia High School in 1938. She continued her education at the University of Minnesota and Minneapolis Business College. On October 31, 1942 Bette was united in marriage to Anthony P. “Tony” Hillemeier. To this union, they brought 5 children.

Bette spent the bulk of her life in service in numerous roles, volunteering in her church and community. She was the President of the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW) from 1977 – 1979 and was ultimately awarded the Benemerenti Medal by Pope John Paul II, for her service to the Catholic Church. She was most proud of her service in Hospice, getting Hospice implemented in all parishes in the diocese. She spent her retired years working as a Hospice volunteer, writing comforting notes to surviving families.

Bette is survived by her children: Villa (Ted) Lippert of Blomkest, Peter Hillemeier of Alexandria, Mark (Marlena) Hillemeier of St. Cloud, Christopher (Marie) Hillemeier of Alexandria and J.R. (Jennifer) Hillemeier of Byron, eight grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. Bette was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Tony; daughter-in-law, Jeri Hillemeier; grandson, Joseph Hillemeier; sister Phyllis, and brothers Richard and John.
