Alvin August Matzke, born on August 1, 1931, to Anton Matzke and Auguste Stern Matzke. He grew up on the family farm in Cottonwood County, nestled between Lamberton and Jeffers. His early education took place in the one-room schoolhouse at Sunny Hill District #3, where he attended until the 8th grade. Alvin then dedicated himself to helping out on the family farm.In his early adulthood, Alvin served in the navy for four years, 1951-1955 contributing to his country before his honorable discharge. He was a radio operator apprentice. He earned two medals, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Navy Occupational Service Medal. But it was in the kitchen where his true passion flourished. As a chef, he worked at Ehler’s Steakhouse in Worthington, MN, and later in Sleepy Eye, MN. Alvin delighted in creating culinary masterpieces, infusing love and flavor into every dish. Beyond the kitchen, Alvin was an avid reader, devouring anything and everything that crossed his path. His curiosity knew no bounds.
