Mercedes Leigh Carpenter and Lateef Deondra Mahaffey Jr

Two people wanted for helping cause a drug overdose in Willmar last September have been captured and being charged in Kandiyohi County Court.

On Sept. 26, 2022, Willmar Police were called to a residence in the 1100 block of Trott Avenue SE on the report of an unresponsive 35 year old man. Officers found him deceased, with evidence of illicit drug use. An investigation and autopsy determined the man had died from a fentanyl overdose. Additional investigation led to information about those who had  sold the fentanyl to the man who died.
Based on that, arrest warrants were signed by the court for the following:
• Lateef Deondra Mahaffey Jr, age 26 of Benson – 3rd degree murder
• Mercedes Leigh Carpenter, age 19 of Maynard – 3rd degree murder (She made her first court appearance on Wednesday, Aug. 9)
Mahaffey was arrested on his warrant in Wright County and is being held in the Wright County Jail, pending transfer to Kandiyohi County.
The Willmar Police Department was assisted by the MN Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the CEE-VI Drug and Gang Task Force.
