Three teenage boys were injured when the ATV they were riding rolled over in Renville County Friday afternoon.

On July 23, at 12:39 p.m. the Renville County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting an all-terrain vehicle crash on 180th Street, north of 145th Street, about eight miles southeast of Sacred Heart. The caller reported the ATV had rolled on its side into the ditch, and the driver was trapped underneath.

Responders on scene learned the driver, Trevor Peterson, age 15, of Sacred Heart, had been freed from the ATV by the passengers. Peterson was treated, then flown from the scene to the Hennepin County Medical Center with severe injuries. Two passengers — Jason Jansen, age 15, of Renville, and Javin Mugai, age 16, of Echo — sustained minor injuries as a result of the crash but were not transported to the hospital.

Investigation suggested the ATV, a 2018 Polaris Ranger, was traveling north on 180th Street when the driver lost control. The ATV entered the west ditch and rolled onto its side, landing on the driver. Both passengers were wearing their seatbelts; however, it is believed that the driver was not. None of the occupants were wearing helmets.

Assisting the Renville County Sheriff’s Office at the scene were the Sacred Heart Fire and Rescue, Sacred Heart Medical Response Unit, CentraCare Ambulance- Redwood Falls, and North Memorial Air Care.
