Three downtown Fairfax structures burn Sunday morning (updated)
Three structures in downtown Fairfax burned on Sunday morning.
According to the Fairfax Police Department, at about 4:35 a.m. on Oct. 2, the Fairfax Fire, Rescue and Ambulance was paged for a structure fire near the intersection of Park Street South and 2nd Avenue Southeast. On scene, the Fire Department learned that the structure was fully engulfed.
Two downtown businesses, which includes the three structures, were a total loss. Two other buildings, including the United States Post Office and the Lion’s Den, had minor damage.
The Fairfax Post Office has temporarily closed due to damage. The United States Postal Service says Fairfax customers can pick up mail, packages, and post office box mail at the Gibbon Post Office at 1070 1st Ave St.
USPS says no mail was damaged in the fire and no timetable has been established for the return of retail services at the Fairfax offices.
The scene is currently being investigated by the Minnesota State Fire Marshall’s Office, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Fairfax Police Department and Fairfax Fire Department.
The Fairfax Fire Department, Rescue and Ambulance was assisted by Franklin Fire Department, Gibbon Fire Department, Hector Fire Department, Morton Fire Department, Winthrop Fire Department, Morgan Fire Department, Sleepy Eye Fire Department, New Ulm Fire Department, Renville County Sheriff’s Office and Central Region Cooperative.
