A St. Paul man was sentenced in Redwood County Court on March 22 for writing a forged check to himself.

On Dec. 12, 2019 an officer with the Lower Sioux Tribal Police Department learned that Dillion Paul Mathias, age 22, of St. Paul, had forged a check that had been stolen from a business — Steve’s Corner BP, in St. James. The owner of Steve’s Corner BP believed a former employee had originally taken the checks and distributed them to Mathias and another defendant.

Mathias wrote one of the stolen checks to himself in the amount of $900, and cashed the stolen check at Jackpot Junction Casino and Hotel on Sept. 10, 2019.

Mathias was convicted on the charge of Possession or Sale of Stolen or Counterfeit Check. He was sentenced to 15 days in the Redwood County jail with one day credit for time served, two years supervised probation by Redwood County, and 13 months in the MN Correctional Facility in St. Cloud, stayed for two years.
