On Friday, Francisco Javier Ramirez, age 32, of Olivia, was sentenced in Redwood County Court to nearly three and a half years in prison for a felony criminal neglect charge resulting from the death of a Redwood Falls nursing home resident almost four years ago.

On Sept. 10, 2017, the Redwood Falls Police received a report of a 100 year old resident at Sunwood Good Samaritan Center who had fallen out of a bathroom chair lift and broken her ankle.

An internal review by Sunwood staff suggested that Ramirez, an nursing home aid, acted outside protocols when he tranferred the victim from her bath, not using the swing chair properly or getting assistance from another person. She fell approximately five feet to the floor, and later investigation suggested she had died in part from injuries from the fall.

An initial charge of manslaughter in the second degree was eventually dismissed in favor of a charge of felony criminal neglect. On Friday, Ramirez was sentenced to 41 months at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud, with two days credit served.
