A Morton man, Carlos Rueben Espinoza, age 36, was sentenced in Redwood County Court for making felony level threats of violence against a child last autumn.

According to court documents, on Sept. 26 of last year, the Redwood County Sheriff’s Office got a call about an incident on a school bus involving the caller’s child. According to witnesses, several children were bullying the caller’s child, tearing a page out of a library book. Finally, the victim grabbed one of the bullies and pushed him away.

A bit later, according to witnesses including the bus driver, Espinoza drove his car past the bus in a no-passing zone, then hit his brakes to slow and stop the bus. According to witnesses and audio footage, Espinoza then approached the bus driver’s window to yell at the driver, then jumped on the side of the bus and began grabbing at the bullied child as the driver stepped in the way. Espinoza then grabbed the victim’s library book and threw it into the ditch. Witnesses state he also yelled threats of violence directly at the victim. In dashcam footage provided to law enforcement, Espinoza can be heard making physical threats against both the boy and his father.

On June 26, Carlos Rueben Espinoza was sentenced for felony threats of violence to 28 months in the correctional facility in St. Cloud, stayed for three years, 45 days local confinement, three years supervised probation, and fines and fees of $435.
