Minnesota public schools, high school league activities, temporarily shut down due to COVID-19 outbreak
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz this morning (Sunday) ordered the temporary shutdown of public schools to allow administrators and teachers to make plans to combat COVID-19 as new cases continue to grow.
Schools will be closed to kindergarten through 12th grade students by Wednesday and will remain shut down through March 27.

Todd Lee, of Red Rock Central Schools, stated on Sunday, “We are closing immediately beginning Monday, March 16th through March 27th. We’ll be sending out more information in coming days. If you are a parent or guardian who is an emergency responder with children 12 years of age or under please let us know if you need childcare during regularly scheduled school time. We’ll be contacting families who qualify for free and reduced price lunches as that will be made available during the closure. Our staff will report on Monday and take this time to work on plans to deliver high quality education remotely, should an extended closure be needed.”
Also on Sunday morning, the Minnesota State High School League issued a directive about the situation. Effective from Wednesday, March 18 through Friday, March 27, there will be no MSHSL activities and athletics at any member school. This includes all participation including, but not limited to training, practices, scrimmages, and contests. The previous MSHSL directive prohibiting scrimmages, contests and competitions with other MSHSL programs for Spring activities and athletics will continue until April 6.
On Saturday, state health officials said the number of cases of the new coronavirus in Minnesota had risen to 35, up 14 from Saturday. Among the new cases was a person in his or her 30s in Renville County. It is important to note the press release from RC Hospitals and Clinics states the patient “is now at home recovering.”
