Just one day before Minneota public schools planned to open for the school year, the district announced it is postponing its opening until Tuesday, Sept. 1. The announcement came after staff member who was in the buildings Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of last week tested positive for COVID-19.

Minneota Public Schools, which represents students and families in areas of Lincoln, Lyon and Yellow Medicine counties, had planned to open Monday, Aug. 24.

Superintendent Dan Deitte stated, “We have worked with MDH to identify those who had close contact with the case, and have communicated with them individually. The risk of exposure for other individuals present in the building on those dates is no greater than the risk of contracting the virus in the general community.”

Deitte added, “Out of an abundance of caution, the school board has moved to delay the start of the school year until Sept. 1. I recognize that this quick change may be challenging for families who had planned for the school year to begin tomorrow. I apologize. Under these unprecedented times, we all have to work together to prioritize the health and safety of our students, staff, and school community.”
