Two area Indian Communities received grants this week to help with affordable housing.

On Thursday the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced $13.1 million to Minnesota Tribes to help carry out affordable housing activities to protect the safety and health of their Tribal members and communities.  The Lower Sioux Indian Community has received $122,455, while the Upper Sioux Indian Community will receive $198,289.

The amount of each grant is based on a formula that considers local needs and housing units managed. Eligible activities for the funds include housing development, operation and maintenance, modernization of existing housing, and crime prevention and safety activities.
