Lost child found with help of Axel, the Willmar police dog

A small child and their dog who was lost north of Spicer was found with the help of Willmar Police Dog Axel Sunday afternoon.

The Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Department says at 224 p.m. they received a call that a 3-year-old was missing in the area of the 15000 Block of Old Mill Road in New London Township. The caller said the child and the family dog had been missing for about 10 to 15 minutes before they called the sheriff’s office.

Deputies arrived and began a search, and requested help from the Willmar Police Department K-9 unit Axel and his handler. Axel was able to pick up the child’s scent and tracked the child and the family dog about a quarter mile from their home, and they were returned home uninjured.
