The long-in-the-planning Redwood County Veterans Cemetery is set to have a groundbreaking ceremony next September. The approximately 60 acre site is beside Highway 19/71, just before it heads down the hill toward Morton. (Kibble Equipment in background.)

This year is a big one for long-planned projects in the Redwood Falls area. The lake dredging is set to begin this summer, and early construction has started on a new courthouse for Redwood County.

Of special interest to area vetarans and their families, the long-hoped for upcoming Redwood County Veterans Cemetery is set to have its groundbreaking ceremony this coming September, according to the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs.

The project has been years in the making, with the county, the state, and the federal governments all having to coordinate on funding and timing to make it happen. Final design of the landscaping is being done as we speak. The land for the cemetery, just off Highway 19/71 right before you head down the hill toward Morton, is almost all set to be turned over to the state, which will supervise the actual construction.

KLGR’s Joshua Dixon spoke with Redwood County Veterans Services Officer Dustin Hunter this week about how progress on the veterans cemetary is going:

If things go as planned, the Redwood County Veterans Cemetery will be finished by Veterans Day of 2023, with a dedication on Memorial Day of 2024.
