Hwy 59 concrete repair project in Lyon, Murray counties begins July 22
The Minnesota Department of Transportation will repair two sections of concrete pavement on Highway 59 in Lyon and Murray counties beginning July 22. Separate detours will be in place for repair work at each location. The first detour (for Hwy 59 from Hwy 14 to Hwy 30) starts July 22 to allow workers to locate repairs in a safe environment. Crews will begin making repairs the week of July 26.
The project includes removing and replacing deteriorated concrete. The road surface will also be refinished using a process known as diamond grinding. Diamond grinding is like using sandpaper on wood in that it provides a smoother surface and as a result, a quieter ride.
Lyon and Murray Counties
In south Lyon County and north Murray County, repairs will be made on Hwy 59 from Hwy 14 near Garvin, to just north of Hwy 30. Beginning July 22, the roadway will close to through traffic and be detoured for approximately eight weeks. The detour route uses Murray County Roads 12, 29, Lyon County Road 5, and Hwy 14..
Homes and businesses along Hwy 59 will remain accessible during the project. People can access Lake Shetek using Murray County Road 48 from County Road 29 on the detour route.
Marshall area
In the Marshall area, repairs will be made on Hwy 59 from Hwy 23 to Lyon County Road 6. The detour for the Marshall section will go into effect in approximately four to six weeks. The detour route for through traffic uses Lyon County Roads 6 and 35, and Hwy 23.
Homes and businesses along Hwy 59 will remain accessible during the project.
Additional project information
Benefits of the project include a smoother road surface and quieter ride. The project cost is $1.7 million, and Interstate Improvement, Inc., is the contractor. Work is scheduled to be complete by mid-September. Please note that the start and end dates could change due to unforeseeable circumstances, and that all traffic impacts may not be known at this time.
Work zone travel
MnDOT advises travelers to always slow down when approaching every work zone, then navigate through with care and caution. Other reminders:
- Never enter a roadway that has been blocked with barriers or cones.
- Stay alert; work zones constantly change.
- Watch for workers and slow-moving equipment.
- Obey posted speed limits; fine for a work zone violation is $300.
- Minimize distractions behind the wheel.
- Be patient; expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
