Highway 71 construction starts May 4 with detour Jackson to Windom
Highway 71 motorists can expect to encounter a few lane closures between Jackson and Windom beginning April 13 as crews do minor culvert work in preparation for the resurfacing and bridge replacement that is expected to begin May 4 with a detour.
Construction on Highway 71 from north of Highway 60 in Windom to Highway 30 is also expected to begin May 4, but that resurfacing work will take place with traffic controlled by a pilot car. Motorist can expect lane restrictions and brief delays until early July.
The detour between Jackson and Windom is necessary for the bridge replacement north of Jackson and consists of Interstate 90, Highway 86, and Highway 60. This section of Highway 71 work is expected to be complete mid-August.
Work on Highway 71 from Jackson to Windom includes resurfacing 18 miles, replacing bridge (large box culvert) north of Jackson, improving culverts and replacing guardrail in multiple locations
Work on Highway 71 from north of Highway 60 in Windom to Highway 30 includes resurfacing 12 miles and improving culverts.
Following guidance from state health officials and to prevent further spread of COVID-19, MnDOT crews will maintain social distancing practices while working.
Duininck, Inc. was awarded both projects with bids of $8,097,096 (Jackson) and $2,425,111 (Windom).
