In the spring of 2019, the Minnesota Department of Transportation closed part of Highway 67 near the Upper Sioux State Park because of a large slope failure.

This week, project manager for the Highway 67 closure determined it’s not feasible to repair the damaged section of the roadway. After a land and cost analysis, the department is recommending permanently closing that section of Highway 67  and rerouting to nearby roads. The closure currently begins at the Upper Sioux Agency State Park entrance and extends approximately one-half mile southeast near the Yellow Medicine River Bridge at 600th Street.

A detour is in effect using Highway 23, Highway 274 and Yellow Medicine County Road 18. Highway 67 is open from Highway 23 (Granite Falls) to the Upper Sioux Agency State Park Visitor Center. To access the Upper Sioux Agency State Park Yellow Medicine Campground, follow the detour and approach from the south. There is no through access from the Upper Sioux Agency State Park to the Yellow Medicine Campground.

Officials are currently seeking feedback from local governments will be begin engaging with the public in the next few weeks.
