Tree-killing Emerald Ash Borer is getting closer to KLGR-land.  The state Agriculture Department has confirmed emerald ash borer for the first time in McLeod County, near Hutchinson. It has already been found this season in Lyon, Brown, and Kandiyohi County.

That makes McLeod County the 42nd in the state where the tree-killing pest has been found. McLeod County is now under an emergency quarantine, which limits movement of firewood and other ash material out of the area. The first ash borer infestation in the county was discovered several miles east of Hutchinson.

A virtual informational meeting for residents and tree care professionals will be held on Tuesday, September 12, from 10 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Experts from the MDA will give a brief presentation followed by a question-and-answer session.

Federal identification confirmed the presence of the insect larvae, which kill ash trees by tunneling under the bark and feeding on the part of the tree that moves nutrients up and down the trunk.
