Courtland man who pulled gun on Menard’s shopper sentenced to jail time

The Courtland man who pulled a gun on a shopper in the New Ulm Menards parking lot was sentenced to jail time.

Gregory John Olson, 66, was convicted of felony 2nd-degree assault with a dangerous weapon in Brown County Court.  Prosecutors dropped charges of threats of violence, carrying a firearm without a permit, 5th-degree assault, dangerous weapons, and illegally transporting a firearm in exchange for a guilty plea to the assault charge.

District Court Judge Robert Docherty sentenced Olson to 120 days in jail with credit for four days served.  Olson was allowed to stagger his jail sentence.  He was booked in the Brown County Jail on Friday to serve the remaining 30 days of his sentence, which was handed down on Feb 1.

In March 2022, Olson pointed a gun at a man’s face in the Menard’s parking lot after the man asked Olson to apologize for a comment made to the man’s wife inside the store.  Witnesses told police they saw the two men struggle as Olson held the gun.

Police say a loaded Ruger handgun was found in Olson’s vehicle following the incident.  Olson did not have a permit to carry in Minnesota, according to court records.
