Fourth Street in Redwood Falls, one of the most-used streets, is set to be rebuilt from the watermains and sewers up starting this year.

Fourth Street in Redwood Falls is set to get a major upgrade starting this year, with the whole length of the heavily-used street receiving new storm and sanitary sewers, watermains, streets, sidewalks, and over a mile of curb and gutter.

At Tuesday’s Redwood Falls City Council meeting, the bid of $3,194,251 was awarded to M.R. Paving and Excavating, Inc. of New Ulm. The low  bid was 16% below the Engineers Estimate.

The funding for the 4th Street reconstruction comes from several sources. Based on the bids received, project costs will be allocated to the following sources: Federal STIP Funding $1,693,670, Municipal State Aid Funding 855,553, and City of Redwood Falls 1,370,028.

The total cost to the City of Redwood falls including project financing costs, and the proposed  project financing comes to $1,435,548. Annual payments on the utility revenue bonds will average approximately $105,000 per year with  the water fund contributing 44% of the payment, and the sanitary sewer fund contributing 38% of  that payment, and the storm sewer fund contributing 18% of the payment.

As part of the project the Redwood Falls Post Office is set to have its post office boxes in the middle of 4th Street removed and mostly likely moved to the alley behind the post office. This is at the post office’s request, since the concrete island in the center of 4th Street presents safety concerns to post office staff, and people tires.
