On Tuesday, the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) announced the City of Lamberton will soon receive $3.48 million to construct a “community safe room”. The funds are part of FEMA’s Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) program.
The project is intended to provide life safety to people in the city of Lamberton and students at Red Rock Central Public Schools. FEMA determined that Lamberton doesn’t have adequate infrastructure to protect the population from tornados.
The Lamberton Community Safe Room Project will be a 10,608 square foot concrete tornado safe room attached to the new Red Rock Central School. This safe room will provide near-absolute life safety for nearly 1,450 residents, including students at Red Rock Central Public Schools. The safe room, equipped with a back-up generator, will also serve as a multi-purpose gymnasium for both educational and athletic purposes.
The Lamberton Community Safe Room is the only Minnesota project to receive funding from FEMA in this round of projects, and the first Minnesota project to receive funding from the BRIC program.
