Brown County Sheriff’s Department giving county residents free catalytic converter IDs to prevent thefts

You’re probably aware that a number of cars and trucks throughout KLGR-area have had their catalytic converters stolen in the past year.

As a result, the Brown County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Minnesota Commerce Fraud Bureau to prevent catalytic converter thefts by giving out free CATGUARD unique identifying labels that can be applied to a vehicle’s catalytic converter.

Citizens of Brown County can stop at the Law Enforcement to pick up a CATGUARD label.  You will need to know your license plate number and the VIN number of your vehicle when registering the unique code assigned to the label.

The kit comes with detailed instructions on how to affix your unique identifying label to your catalytic converter.  If you need help applying the label to your catalytic converter, the Sheriff’s Office suggests taking your vehicle to your regular mechanics and have them attached the label during a regular oil change or other service visit.

These labels will help law enforcement identify victims of catalytic converter theft in the event that suspected stolen converters are discovered during traffic stops or other encounters with law enforcement.
