Bird Island Elementary School to be officially closed

The fate of the Bird Island Elementary School was resolved Monday evening, when the BOLD School Board voted 4 to 3 to close the Bird Island School immediately.

Last March, experts advised the BOLD School Board that students and staff at Bird Island Elementary School should be relocated until hazardous air, mold, and water infiltration problems were addressed. The school board directed the facility committee and consultants to analyze the school and research options for alternative locations.

In April, the School Board learned it was estimated to cost around $17 million  to do needed repairs to the 103 year old building to house students again. At that time, the board approved temporarily moving all school functions to the Olivia campus until a long-term solution for Bird Island Elementary School could be determined.
