Atwater man dies after crash on South 1st Street in Willmar

An Atwater man is dead after a two-vehicle crash in Willmar Thursday morning.

Willmar Police say it appears 63-year-old Michael Rieke may have had some sort of a medical emergency just before his mini-van rear-ended a pickup at the intersection of South 1st Street and Willmar Avenue at 9:46 a.m.

Rieke was given first aid at the scene, then taken by ambulance to Carris Rice Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the pickup that he struck at a relatively low speed was 87-year-old Vernon Spieker of Willmar and was not injured.
