A child was behind the wheel of a vehicle that led police on a short pursuit Saturday night. An 11-year-old boy was taken into custody after the chase, said Mankato Public Safety Associate Director Dan Schisel.  The boy was transported to the Carver County Juvenile Detention Center.

The pursuit started at 10:14 p.m. Saturday in the Mound Ave/Sibley Parkway area when a patrol officer noticed a vehicle without headlights and attempted a traffic stop.

Schisel said the pursuit was very short, staying in the Sibley Parkway, Rogers & Marcy streets area.

The boy was driving the car, which belongs to a relative, said Schisel.  The vehicle owner told police that no one had permission to take the vehicle.

There are multiple charges the boy is potentially facing, including vehicle theft, fleeing police in a motor vehicle, and driving without a license.
