Litchfield couple arrested on drug charges after Redwood Falls traffic stop

A Litchfield couple was arrested on multiple drug charges during a traffic stop in Redwood Falls last week.

On Wednesday, Oct. 20, a Redwood Falls Police Officer was driving his squad car on Cook Street. At the intersection with Dekalb Street, he noted an approaching car with a cracked windshield in front hf the driver, and a burnt out brake light. The officer stopped the car on Cook Street, at the intersection of George Ramseth Drive.

As the driver approached, he noted the back seat occupant, later identified as Cody Duane Mayer, age 28, of Litchfield, making several quick movements. When the officer was speaking to the driver, Mayer appeared to be asleep in the back seat of the car, although the officer noted Mayer open one eye and look toward him. The officer detected the scent of burnt marijuana from inside the car.

The driver, Julia Gabriela Franco, age 23, of Litchfield, informed the officer she did not have a valid drivers license. While Franco unsuccessfully searched for insurance information, Mayer asked if he could move up to the front passenger seat.

Based on his observations, the officer initiated a search of the vehicle. He turned up a white purse and a gray duffel bag that both contained much drug paraphernalia that contained residue of methamphetamine, and blue pills which appeared consistent with fentanyl.

Franco and Mayer have both been charged in Redwood County Court with a variety of drug and driving offenses.
