COVID-19 News: Kandiyohi County Jail suspends inmate intakes after inmate tests positive

Kandiyohi County Sheriff Eric Holien says the county has temporarily suspended taking in new prisoners at the Law Enforcement Center in Willmar after an inmate tested positive for COVID-19.

In an email, Holien said the positive test result triggered a series of additional tests, and they are in the process of doing saturation testing of all inmates and staff. He said “ As a precaution we shut down all intakes into the Kandiyohi County Jail. During this saturation we will be doing a series of tests to find the number of symptomatic as well asymptomatic inmates and staff. With the mitigation steps being taken we are hoping once base line numbers are attained the steps we are taking will reduce or mitigate the spread. We are doing this in corporation and as recommended by CDC and MDH guidelines. We are waiting for results to come back.”

Holien says until they re-open the Kandiyohi County Jail, new inmates will be sent to the Meeker County Jail in Litchfield.
