James L. Pietz age 73, of Springfield, died on July 9, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, July 14, from 9:30 am to 11:00 am at the United Methodist Church in Springfield.
A Memorial Service will be held at the United Methodist Church in Springfield on Tuesday at 11:00 am. Service capacity will be limited. We request your kind understanding of family and close friends for that portion of the celebration of Jim’s life.
The clergy will be Pastor Rick Frederickson. Interment will be at the Congregational Cemetery in rural Comfrey.

James Lynn Pietz was born on December 3, 1946 to Elmer and Myrtle (Rue) Pietz in Springfield. He grew up on a farm by Comfrey and graduated from Comfrey High School. Jim then received his Associate’s Degree from Worthington State Junior College. He then worked at a New York Life Insurance Agent for 46 years and after retirement drove for Superior Transportation. On June 4, 1988, he was united in marriage to Alice (Sellner) Rethwill in Comfrey. Jim enjoyed traveling and traveled to all 50 states, watching his grandchildren’s sporting events, and doing crossword puzzles and yardwork. He was a member of the Springfield Golf Course, Son of the American Legion, Lion’s Club, Boy Scouts, and a past member of the United Congregational Church in Comfrey and current member of the United Methodist Church in Springfield.
He is survived by his wife Alice of Springfield; stepdaughter Kristi (Mike) Scheffler of Sanborn; step grandchildren – Kendall (Chris) Koep of Alexandria, Cooper (Samantha) Scheffler and Decker Scheffler both of Sanborn; step great grandchild Crew Koep; siblings – Kermit Pietz of Golden Valley, MN and Shirley Jean McDaniel of Layton, UT; and many nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; brothers – Kenny, Donald (Lois), and Robert (Marion); sister Donna (David) Hitzen; sister-in-law Shirley Ann Pietz, and brother-in-law Francis McDaniel.
