Cool Temps Still Slowing Spring Fieldwork, Planting

Lingering cooler-than-normal temperatures and additional precipitation across much of the state resulted in another week of minimal fieldwork, with 0.2 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending April 10, 2022, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Snow continued to melt, and fields remained wet and muddy.

Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 2 percent very short, 8 percent short, 67 percent adequate, and 23 percent surplus.

Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 4 percent very short, 23 percent short, 67 percent adequate, and 6 percent surplus.

All crops remained at 0 percent planted, well behind the progress last year but not unusual historically.

No issues were reported with calving and livestock.

Farmers are working on getting field equipment ready for the upcoming planting season.
