Druzella “Zella” Caspers, age 89, of Bird Island, died Sunday, November 29, 2020 at the Buffalo Lake Health Care Center. Private family memorial services will be held at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Bird Island with Rev. Mandy France officiating. Burial is in the Bird Island City Cemetery. A public visitation will be December 11th from 5-7 PM at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Olivia. Due to health department concerns the strictest Covid guidelines will be followed including a limited number of people in the funeral home at any given time.

Druzella A. Rekkedahl was born December 2, 1930 in Minneapolis, Minn. After being cared for by relatives for a few years, she lived at an orphanage in Minneapolis for a time. She then moved to Granite Falls where she lived with several families including Morton and Martha Carney who introduced her to her future husband.
During high school she worked at the Granite Falls Hospital where she developed her interest in nursing. After graduation from Granite Falls High School, she attended nurses training at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar receiving her LPN degree.
She married Donald Caspers on September 4, 1953 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Bird Island. She returned to nursing in the 1960s when her children were all in school working many years at the Renville County Hospital, mainly as a surgical nurse and in the emergency room, as well as working at the Island Manor. She was a longtime member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and was involved in Circle, Sunday School, and ALCW/WELCA. She loved working at the church fair stand at the Renville County Fair. Her faith and her family were very important to her as were her many friends. She was an active community volunteer assisting with 4-H, Girl Scouts, and at school. She enjoyed needlework, sewing, and quilting.
She is survived by her son Perry (Connie) Caspers of Cross Lake, and Perry’s step-children Brian (Cheri) Berry and their children Zach Berry, Kaylee (Dannie) Jensen, Kara (Sam) Femrite and their son Zaden, Ann Marie (Tim) Haag and their children Breanna (Zach) Pachucka, Jenna and Jacob Haag, Jodi (John) Kohnen and their children Kyler (Michaela) Kohnen, Alex and Grace Kohnen, Brad (Kacy) Berry and their children Grant and Ayla Berry; daughter Jean (Mark) Caspers-Simmet of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and their children Willa and Donnie Simmet; daughter Mary (David) Caspers-Graper of Brookings, S.D.; son Peter (Taran) Caspers of Bird Island, and their children Jon (Rachel) Caspers and their daughter Leighton, Dustin (Taylor) Caspers, Tyann Caspers; daughter Jennifer (Scott) Rose of Sleepy Eye, and their children Taylor, Madison, and Paige Rose; daughter Heather (Eli) Reeve of Elbow Lake and their children Brady and Stephanie Reeve; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Chris and Gene Johnson; cousin Ann Louise Rekkedahl; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; her son Jon Joseph; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Margaret and Wesley Johnson, John and Dibba Caspers, Cecil Robert and Colleen Caspers, Joan and Ray Fitzloff, Kay and Jay Katzenmeyer, Mickey and Myron Fisher; and aunt and uncle Irene and Harvey Rekkedahl.
She lived the last five years of her life at the Buffalo Lake Health Care Center where she received excellent care and made many friends. Zella touched the lives of many throughout her life. Blessed be her memory!
