Cattle Numbers Down in Latest Report

All cattle and calves in Minnesota as of January 1, 2020, totaled 2.28 million head, according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Cattle report. 

This was down 2 percent from January 1, 2019. 

Beef cows, at 355,000 head, were down 4 percent from last year. Milk cows, at 445,000, were down 1 percent from last Year. 

All heifers 500 pounds and over, at 490,000 head, were down 6 percent from last year. 

Heifers for beef cow replacement remained at 95,000 head; heifers for milk cow replacement, at 225,000 head, were down 12 percent from the previous year; and all other heifers were unchanged at 170,000 head. 

Steers weighing 500 pounds and over were up 7 percent from last year to 520,000 head. Bulls weighing 500 pounds and over were down 5,000 head at 30,000 head. 

Calves under 500 pounds on January 1, 2020, totaled 440,000 head, down 4 percent from last year. 

The 2019 calf crop was estimated at 780,000 head, down 2 percent from 2018. 

Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter in all feedlots on January 1, 2020, totaled 400,000 head, down 2 percent from one year ago.
