The funeral service for Adelaide Walseth, 98, of Belview, will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 23, 2019, at Rock Valle Lutheran Church in rural Echo. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Rock Valle Cemetery following the service.

Adelaide was the sixth of eight children born to Halvor and Anna (Abrahamson) Kvendru. She was born on February 13, 1921, at her parent’s farm in Swedes Forest Township, near Belview. She was baptized and confirmed at Rock Dell Evangelical Lutheran Church, rural Belview.  Adelaide had five brothers and two sisters. Her favorite childhood memories included sitting in the shade in the summer taking turns churning butter in a barrel churn and playing dolls with her sister Kay.

Adelaide went to country school through 8th grade at District #89. She attended her first three years of high school in Echo, and Adelaide graduated from Belview High School in 1938. After high school, Adelaide lived with Dr. Silver’s family in Belview where she helped with housework and the care of their little girl. Adelaide met Carl Walseth at a community dance, and they were married at the Rock Valle parsonage in Granite Falls on January 14, 1940.  Adelaide and Carl became parents to Patricia Ann, and 3 years later to Charles Allen. The family lived and farmed on the original Walseth farm in Sioux Agency Township.

Carl and Adelaide enjoyed traveling, including trips to California, Hawaii and Seattle, as well as many trips to Johnnie’s cabin at Lake Amelia and Harold’s cabin at Nest Lake. Adelaide always raised chickens and had a big garden.  In later years she enjoyed making Kransekake – Norwegian wedding cakes – for people. She also loved cooking, baking and making lefse. She loved embroidering and making cute clothes for her children, ceramics and calligraphy. Her favorite color was blue, and she decorated her home with rosemaling articles. In 1964, Adelaide made her first baby quilt for her first grandchild, Chris. This began a 45 year quilting career.

In 1979, Adelaide’s son, Charles, died due to brain cancer at the age of 35, leaving behind two little boys. In 1990, Adelaide and Carl celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary.  At that time Carl was fighting colon and lung cancer, and he passed away in September of 1991. Shortly after, Adelaide moved to Echo and resided there until June of 2009 when she moved to the Parkwood Apartments in Belview. Following a stroke in November of 2012 Adelaide moved into the Parkview Nursing Home.  Adelaide was very important to and much loved by her daughter, Pat, and son-in-law, Richard Anderson.

Adelaide is thankful for her 80 years of belonging to Rock Valle Lutheran Church, all her friendships here, and all the wonderful memories of Ladies Aid and quilting together!
