Deer season off to slow start, DNR hopes hunters harvest more

Local DNR officials hope hunters hit the fields and harvest more deer.

Area DNR Wildlife Manager Cory Netland says the weather on opening weekend was cold and wet, and may have discouraged hunters. But Netland says there are still a lot of deer out there, and some may be hiding out in unharvested cornfields.

On opening weekend the DNR did more testing for Chronic Wasting Disease in the Meeker County area. The amount of testing stations was down from last year. No deer tested positive for the disease in this area, but DNR officials expect there to be some in southeast Minnesota.

The 2018 Minnesota Firearms Deer Season wraps up this coming Sunday.
