Extra Helping of Sports for Wed, 2/15

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) - Police say one of the first clues the Nike shoes might be fake was the logo of Michael Jordan. The former NBA star had too many fingers, an officer wrote in his report. WSB-TV reports (http://bit.ly/yKtkCA) that the image and other tips led Gwinnett County, Ga., police to seize 78 pairs of Nike sneakers that authorities contend are counterfeit. Police say they're questioning two South Carolina women they say were traveling with the shoes when police stopped their Pontiac Grand Prix on Saturday on Interstate 85 northeast of Atlanta.  Aside from Michael Jordan's six fingers, investigators said the serial numbers on the shoes' tongue did not match the numbers on the box. Officers said they could peel the Nike logos right off what appeared to be Nike Air Jordans.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Penn State football coach Joe Paterno will be remembered at a memorial service arranged by Harrisburg-area alumni. The late coach's son Scott is scheduled to speak on behalf of the family at Wednesday afternoon's memorial at the Cathedral Parish of Saint Patrick in Harrisburg. Former Penn State players are also expected to attend. Paterno died last month after a brief battle with lung cancer. He had been fired in November following child-sex abuse charges filed against former assistant Jerry Sandusky. Thousands attended a public memorial for the 85-year-old coach at Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center following his burial.

LONDON (AP) - A member of the House of Lords has walked 3,000 miles (4,800 kilometers) from Greece to promote peace during the Olympic Games. Lord Michael Bates has returned to the U.K. and will trek the final steps Wednesday to Britain's seat of government at Westminster. He's been walking since Good Friday of last year in hopes of persuading all nations to cease hostilities during the London Olympic games - just as they did in ancient times.  Bates told The Associated Press he survived the 10 months of walking with support from British consulates in 15 countries on his meandering route to London. The 2012 Summer Olympics will take place from July 27 to Aug. 12.
