MN Sports Headlines for Monday, Jan. 23rd:

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Joe Colman's 16 points helped Minnesota pick

up its third straight win yesterday by beating Northwestern 75-52.

Rodney Williams added 11 points, four steals and three blocks for

the Golden Gophers. John Shurna scored 21 points for the Wildcats,

who missed their first 15 shots of the game to lose for the fourth

time in five games.

 

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - The No. 20 Nebraska women snapped a

two-game losing streak by beating Minnesota yesterday 64-49. Jordan

Hooper scored 23 points and Emily Cady added 13 for the

Cornhuskers. Rachel Banham had 13 points for the Gophers, who shot

about 35 percent and committed 19 turnovers.

 

NEW YORK (AP) - Baltimore Ravens center and St. Paul native Matt

Birk has been named a finalist for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the

Year award. The honor recognizes a player's community service as

well as his playing excellence. San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers

and Chicago cornerback Charles Tillman are the other finalists.

 

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Minnesota football coach Jerry Kill has

expressed sadness at the death of former Penn State coach Joe

Paterno. Kill issued a statement saying, "It's a sad day for

football, but a good day for the man upstairs." He urges people

not to forget about JoePa's accomplishments during his 61 years

with the Nittany Lions.
